This section of the board will be dedicated to an exchange of information on what grows well in the garden. There is more to a garden patch than just tomatoes, cucumbers and weeds. A good deal of how well plants grow is a function of the soil chemistry. Some plants need special macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium etc.), some need a special ph (describes the acidity of the soil), some need well drained soil, and some simply don' care. You can make adjustments to your plot by adding *small* amounts of whatever your plants might need. For example, if you plants want a less acidic soil, small amounts of lime can be added to make the adjustment. Please bear in mind that the plots are not too large... so don't try to plant tomatoes (desirable ph of 6.2 to 6.5) next to blueberries (desired ph 4.5 to 5.5) I'll be happy to work with you one on one to help you figure out what will work best. The end of season community garden soil test from Rutgers University is available at www.sustainablewestmilford.org/2008soiltest.html Please print out a copy for yourself, and refer to it when figuring what you want to plant in the spring.
