The Green Team will act as an advisory committee to the Town Council in West Milford’s quest to become a certified Sustainable Jersey community. “Sustainable Jersey is a certification and incentive program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, save money and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term.” The NJ State League of Municipalities has endorsed this program.
There are required and elective actions that municipalities need to accomplish to become certified. Creating a” Green Team” is a mandatory action. Each action has point value. In order for the township to attain a bronze level of certification a total of 150 points are needed. According to Allessio, the township already has over 100 points. West Milford has accrued points for it’s Greenfest, community garden, farmer’s market, recycling, environmental commission and educational programs, but there is so much more to do. Sustainable Jersey will provide West Milford with the tools and guidance to achieve certification. The New Jersey Clean Energy Program will also provide us with incentives and rebates for our community.
Obtaining a certification from Sustainable Jersey does not mean that West Milford is totally sustainable. It means that we have taken “the first steps on the long journey to sustainability.” With a Sustainable Jersey certification, West Milford will be eligible for grants, rebates and incentives that can help fund more expensive projects benefiting the taxpayers.
