The Organic Community Garden is located at Apple Acres Farm in West Milford. It was created to provide West Milford residents a place to grow their own produce and to learn about growing food organically. Anne Thornton, the owner of Apples Acres on Union Valley Road, generously donated half an acre of her property for Sustainable West Milford to use for a Community Garden.
The Community Garden is an organic garden. Horse manure for fertilizer is donated by local stables. Over 30 West Milford families utilize the plots in the garden, growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. Our members are all ages with different levels of experience, varying from those who are master gardeners to people who have never gardened before, all of whom are willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with one another. The food they harvest is for their own enjoyment, but many grow more than their families can use. Through the Ample Harvest West Milford program, they are able to donate this excess to local food pantries.
In addition to members growing in their own individual plots, there is also a plot planted specifically for the Ample Harvest West Milford program. The Community Garden also has a communal potato plot and a strawberry patch shared by some of the garden members. All members that sign up to participate in the "Spuds Club" and “The Strawberry Patch Gang” take care of these as a community and share the harvest.
Sustainable West Milford hosts educational opportunities for garden members and the public to learn about organic gardening, hosting guest speakers sharing information on different topics. These meetings are free and open to everyone, so join us and please bring a friend or two! Check the calendar for details about the next installment of the Organic Gardening Educational Series.
