Community Garden Meeting May 13, 2009

Garden Meeting

Business

Garden opening day was a great turnout. Gray asked if anyone took any pictures that day, if they would please email them since he forgot his camera that day! Gary asked Dwight to consider taking time-lapse photos of the garden from the same angle over the course of the season so we can see how we progress.

We talked about the need to install a new gate in the rear left of the garden for better access.

It has been decided that we will have a “fire exit” between the community garden and Katie’s. We will decide if we leave it dirt or wood chip the path after Katie has completed her fence.

We talked about the water system being down and the fact that it has been addressed by the committee and being worked on. Also seems we have early critters eating the broccoli leaves, this will be brought to the attention of the pest committee.

There will be a cabinet brought down to the mill house for Ample Harvest collection. Specifics to follow from the Committee.

Topics for the June meeting to be announced. It was suggested that we ask Barbara to present since we missed her this month.

General Meeting

Barbara from Mid Summer Farm was unable to attend, so Gary gave us a brief presentation on Companion Gardening.

Gary referred us to the FAQ on the website for further reference: http://www.sustainablewestmilford.org/Community_Garden_FAQ.html

It was explained that there are 2 different kinds of companion planting – beneficial and dangerous

An example of beneficial is 3 sisters – corn, grows up – bean, climb up – squash, ground cover.

Others were:
Onions make carrots taste better
Nightshades – potatoes, tomatoes, peppers
Also noted was that the leaves in their green form are HIGHLY poisonous
No beans and peas with nightshade plants
Marigolds are good to keep out beetles
Tomatoes grow better with carrots
Mint keeps away slugs
Horseradish keeps potatoes disease free
Chamomile makes basil taste better

Again, there is a ton of info available on the Internet to help guide you. The links are available on our FAQ section of the website.
