June 2009 Community Garden Education

June 19, 2009

We would like to thank Bob Tiemers for presenting us with an overview of beekeeping.
Bob explained the "politics" of a hive and what the bees do, as well as the chain of command.
A demo hive was brought in to show how the hive works and what each component does. And how, if a hive is moved, the bees cannot find their way to the new location.
We went over the bee population decline and the possible reason that this has occured. The research is leaning towards Colony Colapse Disorder (CCD).
